A film, even a fragmentary one, has a center which attracts it. This center if not fixed, but is displaced by the pressure of the film and circumstances of its composition. Yet it is also a fixed center which, if it is genuine, displaces itself, while remaining the same and becoming always more central, more hidden, more uncertain and more imperious. He who films that movie films it out of desire for this center and out of ignorance.

Notes:

The aquarium is a survey of the city of Los Angeles. Drawing on ideas of public spaces in Mike Davis’ City of Quartz -in Los Angeles democratic spaces are virtually extinct-, the film pursues traces of an old idea of community from a first person point of view. Things happen as they happen. In the film this first person gets lost very easily and loves digressions.

Roll 14 and some random notes.

Structure one (trying to make a point).

Hidden Siqueiros’ mural – Abandoned Hospital: Linda Vista – LA river – Church 1761, Mexican land – Skid row – Empty Dodger Stadium – Walt Disney Concert Hall – Union Station – and so on.

It’s also a representation of a very particular labyrinth: one with no center and no borders. This labyrinth is represented by an endless corridor or by the desert itself. Eureka! It is a Borgean labyrinth.

It is about a city of angels and phantoms with a blurry memory about its past (maybe because of the fog) and a beautiful weather.

It’s made by little notes telling the process of someone making this film.

Full of nostalgia

It’s an exploration on architecture and urban planning.

In Los Angeles we build nothing but one isolated object after another. For instance, the Getty Center, the Cathedral on the freeway or the Disney Concert Hall, these are beautiful objects, but just objects that don’t connect anything.

[Interview to Barton Myers]

It’s a fragmentary portrait of a river that now flows through a concrete channel on a fixed course.

It’s also a place that imitates the ocean, full of fish, aquatic plants, rocks and bubbles.

Seeing presupposes distance, decisiveness which separates, the power to stay out of contact and in contact avoid confusion. Seeing means that this separation has nevertheless become an encounter.

Artist’s statement
by Andrea Márquez

“Detour”/ “Around”/ etc

Adverb that denotes the situation of people and things that surround other. Outline of a place. Preceding a numerical expression approximately more or less. Surrounding, around. Metathesis.

Movement that is difficult to determine. Example: hug in the darkness, panning that the camera suddenly stops, sideways glance of the subject that attempts to disguise a state, silence that precedes certain words.

Circumlocution, round about expression, periphrasis.

Without circuit, without result.

More or less close, but without security, without warranty.

Shortly before or shortly after. Still unaccounted for.

Going away, from a distance.

Narrative device that dispenses the linear order of the successive stages leading to. Interruptions.

No destination, no teleology, no money.

Inefficient, eager for simple stuffs.

Desire, yes, always desire.”

Deviation, detour.

La música/ The music | Andrea Márquez | Argentina 2013 | 12’27” | HD Video

Based on John Cage’s ideas, LA MÚSICA explores and sorrounds silences.

In Buenos Aires a woman becomes distracted in her apartment. All the sounds that come through the window take hold of the environment — they become the environment. The elevator, a neighbor’s voice, the imperceptible hum of the woman. It’s four o’clock. It’s a sunny day.

El balcón

El balcón/ The balcony | Andrea Márquez | Argentina/USA 2012 | 13’55” | HD Video

The balcony is a space of uncertainty between the inner and the outside, an area of contact, of exchange. From there, one sees what happens outside. Buenos Aires appears silent and slow. Text enunciated from an indefinite time details the intimate experience of a desire that is attempting to reveal itself. In the film, this desire aligns itself with images of the city – the remains of small happenings that start over and over, a party, an unknown song, a stranger.
